What this solves
Rotterdam's architecture is unique because the city center was bombed in 1940 and rebuilt over six decades. The result is a layered timeline of post-war modernism, postmodernism, and contemporary starchitect work — all walkable in one day. Most travel guides mention Markthal and Cube Houses without explaining how to sequence them or whether Euromast is worth €22.
- Markthal is free to walk through (the arched market hall is open to pedestrians) but most travelers assume it's a paid attraction. The €2 they think they're paying is actually nothing.
- Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen) are €3 entry to the museum-cube (the only one open to the public) if you're not staying in the adjacent Stayokay hostel.
- Euromast (185m observation tower) costs €22 incl. lift ride. Best for clear-day views; on cloudy days it's a €22 disappointment.
The route calculator
Pick your time budget, what you want to include, and whether you want a guided tour. We'll compute the route, total cost, and walking distance.
How to read results
The total has four lines: travel from your base city (€0 if local), spot entries (mostly €0 — most Rotterdam icons are free outside), tour cost (€0 self-guided to €25 guided), and food. The surprise for most travelers is that Rotterdam is dramatically cheaper than Amsterdam per day — Markthal, Erasmus Bridge, Wilhelminapier, and Centraal Station rooftop are all free.
Walking distance uses a 0.7km-per-stop heuristic; actual distances depend on the order. The "time fit" line is the only one that matters for sanity-checking your selection — over-budget days are common because Euromast alone is 90 minutes.
If your selection doesn't fit, drop Euromast first (costliest, longest). If it's well under budget, add Depot Boijmans (€22.50, 2h) for the architectural mirror-of-Rotterdam experience.
Limitations
- Markthal's "free" entry is for the market floor. Apartments above the arch are residential; the food stalls are individual merchants (each charges for their own food). The €0 here refers to walking through — not eating.
- Cube Houses hostel guests have free entry to the museum-cube. If you're staying at Stayokay Rotterdam, skip the €3.
- Euromast's "Space Tower" adventure (€10 extra to climb outside the cage to the top) is weather-dependent and closes in high winds. The €22 base ticket is for the lift only.
- Rotterdam Centraal rooftop is technically "public" but the upper platform requires a museum ticket — only the ground-floor and station hall are free. Don't promise kids a rooftop view without checking.
FAQ
Is the Rotterdam architecture walk worth it if I've already done Amsterdam?
Yes — for a different reason. Amsterdam is a medieval canal city preserved. Rotterdam is a postwar tabula rasa rebuilt. If you've seen one, the other is the contrast that makes both more interesting.
When is Euromast worth €22?
Clear blue-sky days. On cloudy days you see a gray ceiling; on windy days the Space Tower outside-deck closes. Check the weather forecast the morning of and decide. The sunset is genuinely beautiful from up there in summer.
Can I combine with Kinderdijk in one day?
Yes — Kinderdijk is 30 min from Rotterdam by waterbus (April-October) or bus. Morning architecture walk, afternoon Kinderdijk. Total day: €30–€50 per person plus €18 Kinderdijk entry.
Is Markthal's food actually good?
It's a mix. Some stalls are tourist-grade (€8 stroopwafels the size of your face); others are excellent (the fish stall, the cheese stall, the Surinamese bakery). Treat it as a market browsing experience, not a Michelin pick.
